Ayabe (綾部市 Ayabe-shi?) is a city located in Kyoto, Japan.
As of 2008[update], the city has an estimated population of 36,814 and the density of 110.87 persons per km². The total area is 347.11 km².
The city was founded on August 1, 1950.
Ayabe is situated in the mountains of Northern Kyoto prefecture. You can get there by train from Kyoto station or by car in an hour and a half.
It is famous for several things, mainly the founding of Oomoto. In August you can view fireflies from Kanbayashi, which is on the Kanbayashi bus route and takes 40 minutes through beautiful country scenery. In the same area is a hotspring area and development is underway for a new hotspring to be opened by the JR Ayabe station. Ayabe's slightly inconvenient location makes has left it quite unchanged and traditional and a nice peaceful place to live.
