Chaklala is a garrison town of Rawalpindi in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It is located at 33°36'0N 73°6'0E with an altitude of 487 metres (1601 feet).1 It is situated astride the Airport road, to the east of Grand Trunk Road on the main railway line and also has a railway station of its own.

It is home to some important army and air force units, depots and workshops; residential bungalow colonies of British era, and modern and posh Chaklala housing schemes (I, II, and III) with a rapidly diminishing rural area.

Important landmarks

Islamabad International Airport2 is in fact located in Chaklala area. It also has an important air base of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) called Chaklala Airbase located just next to the airport.

The headquarters of the Joint staff headquarters (JSHQ) of Pakistan Armed Forces and the Joint Services Staff College are also located in Chaklala.

Pakistan Television Corporation's Islamabad's centre was initially set up in Chaklala before it was shifted to its present location in Islamabad.3

There is also a dry port in Chaklala.

Demography

Chaklala has a population of around 100,000, the majority of the people are Punjabis and Pothoharis, the remaining are mainly Urdu speaking Mohajirs, Kashmiris and Pathans.

Important roads

Airport road

This road divides Chaklala into north-west and south-east areas. Former mainly consists of the airport, PAF base and Chaklala housing schemes I and II; while the latter is predominantly the Military area and Chaklala housing scheme-III.

Rawal road

It connects Airport road with the Murree road.
