Cheonan (Cheonan-si) is a city located in northeast South Chungcheong province, South Korea. It is surrounded by Cheongwon and Jincheon to the east, and Asan to the west. Cheonan is 83.6KM South of Seoul.2 The city is connected to Seoul and Daejeon by both road and train. Regular Gyeongbu Line trains stop at Cheonan Station in the former city center (a designation now taken on by the area surrounding Yawoori department store), while the KTX trains on the express line stop at Cheonan-Asan Station. Seoul Subway Line 1 has been extended to Cheonan, and metro trains began running between Seoul and Cheonan in January 2005. The T-Money card can be used on all local buses.

Cheonan is known for several agricultural products including grapes and ya pears. The tightly-packed city center is surrounded by small mountains. The main tourist attraction is the nearby Independence Hall, a large exhibition dedicated to the Korean independence movement. The city is also known for a small walnut-flavored cakes in the size and shape of a walnut.

The city is home to two soccer clubs; Cheonan City FC of the National League and Cheonan FC of the K3 League.

Walnut Cakes

Cheonan is well-known as the origin of walnut cakes or hodugwaja (호두과자). When taking a train from Cheonan Station, one can see many merchants selling hodugwaja.citation needed

Festival

Its most well-known festival is Heungtaryeong Festival(흥타령 축제). 흥 means pleasure and joy in the Korean language and usually refers to joyful Korean music. 타령 indicates sorts of traditional music. There was a tune called Cheonansamgeori meaning Cheonan three streets.

The dancing festival is the essence of the events from B-boy to traditional dances from India, Africa, Australia, Ukraine. Lots of teams also participate in the festival from 17 other nations such as China and Japan.3

The festival started in 2003 and it got the position of "prepared" and "promising" in 2006 and 2007, respectively. As of Dec 26th of 2007, the festival was promoted to the degree of "excellent festival.4 That is, it came to get the title from 2008.
