Chungju is a city in North Chungcheong province, South Korea. Namsan is a mountain located on the outskirts of the city.

The city is famous for the annual martial arts festival held in October. Also of note, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon grew up here.

Festival

Chungju city officially has held martial arts festival which is quite unusual events in South Korea. It started the year of 1998, this festival is held annually in October. The theme is "Meeting of the five-thousand-year-old Soul" and the world martial arts. 1

In 2007, participants from 20 nations performed at the festival. Many sports were shown such as Sambo of Russia, Muay Thai of Thailand, and Arnis of the Philippines.2

Chungju Lake

Chungju Lake is the country biggest multi-purpose dam that links together Chungju and its neighborhoods. It is a manmade lake with a vast body of water.

Woraksan Mt and Songnae valley are located nearby. Additionally, this area has cherished cave area/springs.3

Products

Chungju is famous for its production of apples. The principal reasons being because of the large amount of daylight received and high difference of temperatures. The growing of apples started 300 years ago from China and it was 1912 when the city officially began to plant trees. The scale is the greatest in Chungcheongbuk-do.4
