The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (Filipino: Politeknikong Pamantasan ng Pilipinas) commonly known as PUP, Peyupi or PUPoy is a state university in the Philippines. It was founded in October 1904 as the Manila Business School, offering commerce-related courses.123 The university offers tertiary courses of accountancy, engineering, political science, social science, business, arts, agriculture and associate programs.

The main campus is located at Sta. Mesa, Manila along the Pasig River. The PUP Manila consists of three sub-campuses named Mabini, NDC and M.H. del Pilar. The house where Mabini died is now located in the campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The simple nipa retains the original furniture, and some of the books he wrote, and also contains souvenir items, while hosting the municipal library and reading facilities, hence, the main campus is named after Mabini. 14 Some campuses are located in the other side of the metropolis and the rest are located all over the country.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines System has the most students and has the lowest tuition fees among other universities or colleges in the country.5

Centennial Anniversary

In October 2004, PUP celebrated its 100th year anniversary. The theme of the centennial celebration was "PUP: Kabalikat ng Pamahalaan sa Pag-angat ng Antas ng Kabuhayan ng Mamamayan." As part of the celebration, and to highlight the signing of the Declaration of Peace to be put before the United Nations, the PUP System attempted to break the record for the World's largest human rainbow, held by 11,750 individuals assembled in Floriana, Malta. On September 18th, 2004, at the Luneta Grandstand, Manila, PUP succeeded in forming a human rainbow with approximately 30,000 faculty members, students, alumni and staff, breaking the record.56

Controversy

The Sandiganbayan's Fourth Division, on November 13, 2008, has suspended for 90 days 3 officers of the PUP, including its president Dante G. Guevarra, accounting division chief Adriano A. Salvador, and vice president for administration Augustus F. Cesar. Amid the complainants' affidavits of desistance, the court granted the prosecution's September 26, 2006 suspension petition, based on a 1995 complaint by PUP faculty members Zenaida Pia and Cresenciano Gatchalian before the Ombudsman of the Philippines. The accused were charged with graft and corruption involving "the allegedly anomalous 1989 construction of 8 P20.91 school buildings, overpayment of terminal leave benefits to former PUP president Nemesio Prudente, unauthorized payment of fees and honoraria to public works and PUP officials, overpayment on a land acquisition, and questionable disbursement of P10.65 million as payment to a dubious list of creditors, inter alia."8

Students
Students come from both the urban and rural areas of the Philippines, as well as from countries such as Korea, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana.1
